The Goods on Wild Ginger in Bronxville

June
5

I just spoke to manager Branson Lee of Wild Ginger in Bronxville to report for my foodnotes column. He told me it is owned by Alan Lee and Jeff Qiu,the same people who have Watermoon in Rye and Wild Ginger in Ridgefield, Conn. and Great Neck, N.Y. They also own Ching’s Table and Sushi 25, both in New Canaan, Conn., Penang Grill in Greenwich, Conn.,  several restaurants — including another WIld Ginger — in New Jersey, and are working on opening a Wild Ginger in Manhattan at Columbus Avenue and 82nd Street.

This Wild Ginger opened last week in Bronxville. It’s a pan-Asian place, with modern decor in hues of yellow, orange and red. The menu ranges the gamut from China to Malaysia and Indonesia to Japan. Thai red curry, for example, might share the table with grilled lemongrass shrimp and the Bronxville Roll, made with vegetable tempura, spicy tuna and caviar.
The restaurant seats about 100 people. There’s a sushi bar, which seats eight, and a regular bar, which is decorated in white glass that changes color randomly. The manager says they’re hoping to get their liquor license by the weekend.

I’m glad to hear that Wild Ginger is owned by the same people as the one in Great Neck. I lived in Great Neck up until last year and was a regular at their restaurant. The food in Great Neck was very good on a consistant basis and the service was always pleasant and professional.

Tried Wild Ginger on Friday night and came away somewhat disappointed. I realize the restaurant is new, but, after being open for a week is quite disorganized. They still didn’t have their liquor license yet and are expecting to get it this upcoming week.

For appetizers, we ordered the Edemame, Pan Fried Dumplings and Honey Ribs. Edamame was, well, edamame. It had the slightest hint if a licorice flavor. I’m used to the Edamame around the corner at another sushi restaurant which I prefer better because it is salted. The dumplings were overcooked and a little burned on the outside. The filling tasted ok, but was of course a little dry as a result of the overcooking. The ribs were very nice. The meat was very tender and came off the bone very easily.

We were all satisfied but not blown away with our entrees. My Duck Fajitas were good. The sushi was ok and the Pad Thai Chicken was good. However, the entrees didn’t come out at the same time. Instead they came out individually with mine coming our first, the sushi entree came out about three minutes later and the Pad Thai dish came out about five minutes after that. While we were waiting for the other entrees to come out, we could see where the servers and managers were by the kitchen area trying to sort out all of the ready dishes trying to figure out which dish went to which table. I’m willing to give then another chance in the future, but I think we’ll wait a while before doing so.

A couple of more points about Wild Ginger. The color scheme of the restaurant is mostly earth tones. However, the ceiling is backlit blue and the open kitchen area is blue as well. The blue, along with the stainless steel look tables didn’t seem to mesh with the overall color scheme. Also, for our party of three they had to put two tables together. The height of the two tables was off about an inch which is a minor thing but didn’t look right. Also, I’m 6’2” and the low table height made it a little uncomfortable for my legs.

    Thanks for the report!

Just to set the record straight, the Wild Ginger in Englewood NJ is NOT owned by these same fellows that run all the places in Westchester and CT. Englewood is owned by Charles Hamade, and is a tiny Sushi-Japanese oriented place, not related to their namesakes across the Hudson.
