Blueberries for Breakfast

I grow a lot of food in my tiny yard in Nyack, but this is the first year we’ve had blueberries. I harvested the first batch today.

We decided to plant blueberries after a trip to my family lakehouse in Tennessee, where we met a wonderful couple who grow peaches and blueberries on their farm. We’d been looking for some shrubs to soften the front of the house, and after seeing their blueberries, we knew the plants would be gorgeous even in fall and winter.

Here are their plants. Stunning, huh?

It took us a while to find the blueberries, because we wanted mature plants (we’re impatient like that). But we finally found a large selection at in Hawthorne at Rosedale.

We got four varieties. You’re supposed to get at least three so they can fertilize each other.

Far right, Jersey Ã¢â‚¬â€ a late-blooming variety. Closer in, Blueray Ã¢â‚¬â€ a midseason.

And, on the other side of the house, the Patriot is further away, and the Blue Crop is closer in:

It’s just so satisfying having fresh berries right outside your front door.

Good thing we’ve got four kinds. Because the Patriots aren’t going to last for long!

I hae had blueberries every year. i pruned alittle last year and now my blueberry harvest is next to non existant. i did something wrong. they have yet to ripen.. and they are all hidden. I screwed something up. :-\

Thanks, I wondered why my two of a kind blueberry bushes haven’t produced anything this year. Guess I’ve got to get a few more bushes!

I’m so sorry Steve! At least we have the farmers markets. Caren, yes! You need a couple of varieties. I wish I had room for rows and rows like my friends in Tennesee!
