Food Finds in the Lower Hudson Valley

Kickin’ Back on the Lawn at Valley in Garrison

I went to Valley at the Garrison last night to check out the Thursday Night Music Series. For 20 bucks, you get a buffet dinner and a band — complete with plenty of room for the kids to run on the lawn.

Each Thursday, the restaurant sets up tables around the patio (which, BTW, is a new addition this year).  Last night, we heard the musical stylings of the Tracey DeLucia Band. Eh — they were OK. But hey, I’m not a music critic. The food was great!

There’s a big spread. You go through it like any buffet. You can see it behind those greens on the left of the above photo. We started with salad from the restaurant’s garden:

Cornbread:

Coleslaw:

Panzanella made with heirloom tomatoes from the restaurant’s garden. This was my favorite dish of the night. So good:

Jersey corn:

For the kids: Mac & Cheese —

(It costs $5 for kids, BTW.)

Chicken with barbecue sauce. This was the only dish that didn’t wow me. The sauce was a little too sweet for my liking:

The brisket, on the other hand, eaten without sauce, was awesome. The fat had melted into the meat just perfectly.

The band.

I guess after the early crowd takes the kids home, the younger set shows up for cocktails and dancing on the patio. Seems like a lot of fun to me! We had someone along that would prevent such behavior.

Hey! How’d that photo of my niece get in there? Seriously, my sister is up visiting from Texas, and it was a great event to go to with whole family.

Then there was dessert. Fig tartlets.

Yum. Plum cobbler:

Also yum. Banana pudding:

Delishy.  Homemade oreos. Much, much better than the Nabisco kind. (With apologies to my friend Glenn, whose father worked on the engineering of those cookies.)

And my favorite of the evening:

We got a root beer one:

I didn’t take a photo of the first round, but here’s my husband’s second round…. more brisket, more panzanella, and dessert.

Oh, and who’s that hiding behind there?

Sorry. Couldn’t resist.
