I like CH but some of their rules are pretty stupid. When I posted the list of HVRW restaurants originally, it had one restaurant that they were apparently having an ongoing feud with, and they removed my entire post! Then they asked me to repost it without the offending (offensive?) restaurant. I had to cut and paste it from the email they sent me and that is why my HVRW post there is folded (line split) strangely.

I had posted a negative comment (several, actually) in a thread I created about a Thai restaurant near me. Some people wrote to say it wasn't that bad, but there were never any glowing reviews. A couple of weeks ago, two really positive posts showed up within an hour of each other. I suspect that the owner saw (or was told of) the thread there and asked some regulars to post nice stuff. How else would one explain two really good writeups so close together after weeks of none?

There was also an interesting thread about a new steakhouse which had gotten some really bad writeups on CH, especially about obnoxious owners who did not take to criticism. All of a sudden there were some great posts, with people saying nice things about the owners. Those did get removed, I think they figured out something was fishy (and not with the food).

I had a few things deleted from Chowhound since I discovered it in recent months. I could usually figure out why, even if I disagreed with the decision. In one incident, someone was being particularly hypercritical about my posts, so I posted some personal, but admittedly off-topic information to provide context. That line of the exchange was deleted. In another thread, someone asked for suggestions for a party location for what sounded like a bat/bar mitzvah reception (80 13-year olds--what else could it be?) I suggested that another discussion board, specific to such occasions, might be a good place to post. This was deleted. Okay, I mentioned another board. Stupid reason for deleting, I thought, but oh, well. BUT I can't figure out what happened today. On a local geographic site, someone complained about a bad Jewish deli experience after Yom Kippur. I suggested (without mentioning any deli by name) that perhaps the poster might have food shipped from NY. Part of the thread evolved into a debate over fasting on Yom Kippur. The CH team posted something explaining that off-topic posts, such as a debate over fasting/not during Yom Kippur when the thread was about a bad deli, would be deleted. So guess what was deleted? My post. Not the off-topic posts. I posted again, asking why, as clearly the fasting-related posts were still there. Deleted again. I went onto the "site talk" area and explained the situation, again trying to ask why and pointing out the failure to remove the fasting-related exchanges. IN LESS THAN 90 MINUTES, the entire thread (okay, it was only one post) was deleted. Still no answer. I have to admit, it's fun to post, but when this stuff happens, it is very frustrating.

Correct. If you have a vested interest and KNOWINGLY plant something that's one thing, once in awhile someone might not know the rules and in their hearts believe their product is wonderful, they relate to the story and comment on it. That's an oversight and once educated about the policy it usually doesn't happen again. If it does then they're banned rightfully so.

True: But if you have a vested interest in the restaurant then you are a biased sourced. People look for unbiased opinions not "planted" ones.

P.S.
Olive, I strongly disagree with you. While there are negative postings, the majority of us folks who post on Chowhound are friendly people. Some have knowledge about the restaurant business, some do not, but that shouldn't matter. Food is a personal experience to folks of all different backgrounds you do not need to have a professional degree to comment on it.

My posts were deleted from Chowhound a few times. Sometimes you know what the reason is, and sometimes you have no clue as to why. It's just the way it goes. It's that type of site. You either roll with the punches or go elsewhere. I guess I am just a masochist!

Before I became a free-lance food and restaurant writer for the Journal News I was the editor of Chownews NY, at one time a weekly email publication of interesting posts on Chowhound.

From its inception Chowhound has been the effort of a couple of dozen volunteers who have devoted a huge amount of energy, time and, in many cases, money to keep the website -- which until about a year ago -- had no advertising alive. Recently, Chowhound was purchased by CNET and there are now lots of ads, but still a lot of volunteers keeping the site as shill-free and positive as is possible. These volunteers rely on Chowhound's readers and posters to help them keep the shills out.

If you think you see a shill, tell them. There is a link at the bottom of all posts that lets you file a very brief report about what you think is wrong with a post. I know from experience that the current crop of moderators (many of whom have been moderators for years) pay attention. Chowhound receives several thousand posts a day and no amount of staff can catch every error, but the readers can.

Yes, sometimes the rules seem unfair, but they are far from arbitrary. Those rules have helped build a solid, interesting and generally reliable website that is of value to thousands of people. But if you are one of the people who doesn't like what is there I have one bit of advice: there are probably hundreds of websites that will be more to your liking, why not visit and contribute to them.

Chowhound is the poster board for people who think they know so much about the restaurant business but actually know so little. Miserable, negative people. They only post negative comments. It's pathetic.

I didn't know that. I do like eater.com's shill probabilty report.

If you hang around message boards long enough, you start to get to know the personalities of different posters. I'm always suspicious of the new ones!

The shills have gotten a bit more sophisticated. They now mention trivial faults like not being able to get a desired seat by the fireplace. But they alway use marketspeak words and play up the decor and popularity of the place, even though it just opened.

But this sort of stuff from the shills doesn't nearly bother me as much as the trash being spread by the detractors. These guys are getting smart enough to not be 100% negative, but they know what buttons to push, such as describing a steak with a slightly spoiled aroma, or management that refuses to even hear out a major blunder ("they refused to take off the bill that salad with the dead cockroach!") Given the choice, even a careful consumer such as myself would think twice before risking dining there.

CH should require more proof of identity from people who fall into either of these categories, or just delete their posts.

Fair enough, Bob. I see their point.

Maybe I should just stop posting, then!

To your point about shills — I think they're usually pretty obvious, don't you?

If you read their rules, which are posted in a sticky post at the top of each of their forums, you'll see that they want posting from the general public only, not restaurateurs or members of the media unless they are correcting factual information about an existing post.

They don't encourage links to other blogs, because it takes away traffic from their site.

If you had started a thread about Boe@324, even just to announce it, it would have been deleted because of who you are. But because you answered a query, it was allowed.

Restaurateurs are not allow to comment on posts, good or bad, about their restaurant. But if the hours, location or specific menu items are wrong, they can provide a correction.

My personal beef with Chowhound is that they don't adequately police their site for obvious shills or damning comments about a place (i.e., a brand-new poster that's either excessively praising a place with marketing-speak, or trashing every single aspect of their recent visit). A user like myself is allowed to report questionable posts, but I've only seen 3 of the dozen or so I've reported actually removed in the past 3 monts.

They're not exactly fair, but it's their site, and they can run it as they wish.
