Here’s some background, from the press release:
IN HONOR OF WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH,
TOP CALIFORNIA WOMEN WINEMAKERS HOST DINNERS
AND INTRODUCE NEW WINE FLIGHTS
Winemakers, Marketta Fourmeaux, Dorothy Schuler, Carol Shelton and Signe Zoller introduce their wines on the East Coast
– especially created for Women of the Vine Cellars
January, 27, 2008 – Women of the Vine Cellarsâ„¢ is the first of its kind wine company to unite award winning women winemakers under one label. Deborah Brenner, author of WOMEN OF THE VINE®: Inside the World of Women who Make, Taste, and Enjoy Wine (Wiley; November 2006) formed this trailblazing new wine company while writing the book as a celebration of wine and women. Each of the winemakers creates high quality, hand-crafted, limited production wines that truly demonstrate their individual style and nuances of their region.
“We are very proud to introduce Country Roads, bottled and produced by Women of the Vine Cellars, to the East Coast market. As part of our long-term vision we are building a wine portfolio, like an art gallery, that features some of the best artisan women winemakers from around the world, states Brenner. “Women’s History Month is the ideal time for us to release our wines to since it was initiated by an educational task force of Sonoma County in 1978. Also, this year’s theme is Women’s Art – it is a perfect pairing.
As part of Brenner’s vision to introduce these celebrated women and their craft to a broader audience, Fleming’s Steakhouse and Wine Bar of Edgewater, NJ and Radnor, PA created “Women of the Vine flights of wine. In honor of Women’s History Month, the restaurants will be serving red and white wine flights from the Country Roads portfolio for the entire month of March. In addition, they will be hosting winemaker dinners with all four women winemakers and Deborah Brenner on March 6th and 10th.
“We are very happy to participate in women’s history celebrations. This was a perfect way for Fleming’s of Edgewater and Radnor to form a joint program with Women of the Vine Cellars and to recognize women’s achievements all throughout history including the wine industry, said Buddy Chick, partner, Fleming’s of Edgewater, NJ.
Women of the Vine Cellars will also be celebrating “Wine as Art by hosting a winemaker dinner with Iron Chef Winner, Peter Kelly at his newest restaurant, X20 in Yonkers. New York State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins will open the evening with an introduction about Women’s History Month on Sunday, March 9th and will be joined by all four winemakers from California and proprietor, Deborah Brenner.
In 1987, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to expand the national celebration to the entire month of March. Since then, the National Women’s History Month Resolution has been approved with bipartisan support in both the House and Senate. Each year, programs and activities in schools, workplaces, and communities have become more extensive as information and program ideas have been developed and shared.
Women of the Vine Cellars is currently distributed in NY, NJ, PA and DE. For more information, please visit www.womenofthevine.com
