Food Finds in the Lower Hudson Valley

AJ's Burgers Opening in New Rochelle

May
9

Like sliders? Next Saturday there’s a grand opening party for the new AJ’s Burgers & America’s Favorite Foods, a new restaurant on North Avenue in New Ro. Half the proceeds will benefit the New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence, which provides enrichment programs for the city’s public schools.

America’s favorite foods? Why pizza and ice cream, of course. From the press release, here’s what to expect from the menu:

… thin-crust pizza and Italian specialties with his classic homemade sauce; hand-formed hamburgers char-grilled to order; “sliders” topped with grilled onions; fresh-cut skin-on fries; soups made from scratch; and “healthy delicious options” featuring whole grains and less fat. But just try and ignore the dessert menu:  AJ’s offers sinfully delicious signature items like the apple cobbler, served warm with Gifford’s ice cream; Cohen’s own version of Italian style cheesecake and canolis; and brownies baked fresh daily.

Alan J. Cohen — the AJ in AJ’s —  grew up in New Ro. He started in the restaurant business by busing tables at the Thruway Diner. Later, he cooked at the Davenport Country Club, Alex and Henry’s and Saparito’s before moving to Florida. He returned to Westchester County in 1989, and was at the Wedge Inn in Pelham before this.

By the way, here’s the before shot. Way to go AJ!

I've been looking for Alan Cohen even since he left the Wedge Inn in 1995! My wife and I were big fans or his. Alan once gave us a backstage tour at the Wedge Inn and afterwards he gave us official red Wedge Inn T-Shirts that we still have to this day. We learned of him on the old "Restaurant Row" show hosted by "Earl Ziff" on Cablevision's public access channel in 1994 where Alan used to do kitchen demos and commercials for the Wedge. What a nice guy and great cook—I could go on for days about those large pan servings at the Wedge! Good luck and cheers, Alan!

Not related to this location, but two new "soon to be open" in Northern Westchester:

First, Salsa, whose sign claims it is a Latin Restaurant (figures) on Hill Blvd in Jefferson Valley (Yorktown). It's a small store, last occupied by a nice bakery I never bought anything from.

Second, Franks Famous Franks ("established 2008") in Baldwin Place (Somers) on Route 6 near the Putnam border where the Tiki place used to be (never ate there, either).

I have been to AJ's and thought you should know that the Sliders are AWESOME. I can't praise them enough. This place is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
