Food Finds in the Lower Hudson Valley

First Taste: Turkish Cuisine Westchester in White Plains

January

The owners of Turkish Meze in Mamroneck have opened a less-fancy but just-as-delicious new takeout place in White Plains. I stopped in the other day for lunch. I can never resist falafel:

They were light and fluffy inside and crispy and crunchy outside. Great. And the tahini sauce was smooth — not grainy like some.

Here’s a little look around. It hasn’t changed much since it was the chili spot. Long counter:

Spit roasting for gyros:

I also tasted the lentil soup, which was pureed instead of chunky. It was very nicely balanced and great on a cold day:

I took a chicken gyro and the lamb meatballs back to the office for colleagues and had a bite or two of each. The chicken schwarma inside the gyro was a little dry, but spiced nicely. The lamb was moist and heady with cumin — very, very delicious.

My favorite dish of the meal was the hummus. They were making it right in front of me as I waited for the takeout order… how could I not order it? It was smooth, fresh and lip-smackingly good. One of the best around, for sure.

They handed me a free order of baklava as I left. It was drenched — and I mean drenched — in honey.

Fabulous.

And the meal was a bargain, too.
