On Tuesday, May 12th, Navjot Arora of Chutney Masala Indian Bistro in Irvington served a delicious free lunch of Indian food to over 60 seniors at the Embassy Community Center in Dobbs Ferry. The luncheon, which took place from 12 PM to 2 PM, was part of a week long celebration of events for seniors in the Rivertowns.

The menu consisted of chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, basmati rice and naan bread. Arora explained how Indian spices are used and each of the attendees was given a fact sheet on their health benefits. It is his goal to educate the community about Indian food and dispel some of the myths that sometimes discourage people, especially seniors, from trying the cuisine.

“Many times people think all Indian food is very spicy but that’s not true,” he says. “There are many dishes that have a low level of spiciness and some with a touch of sweetness. Also, when cooking Indian food it is very easy to adjust the spice level to your liking.”

The luncheon attendees who lined up for seconds seemed to agree. Arora commented that he has noticed a greater interest in Indian food among the older generation.
