Food Finds in the Lower Hudson Valley

Hi all and happy Monday. What a fantastic weekend, no? OK, the rain on Friday night was cold and dreary, but that made for a good evening to taste one of my favorite dishes at Velo in Nyack, the gnocchi with lamb Bolognese:

There’s something very special about that pasta. Light, fluffly gnocchi; deep, rich flavors in the meat sauce. But it’s not something I’d necessarily order when it’s 90 degrees out, so a nice rainstorm to start the weekend gave my friend just the excuse. (Don’t worry, I stuck my fork over there a few times.)

On Saturday I hit the Pleasantville Farmers Market, and picked myself some of the aged goat cheese from Rainbeau Ridge.

That cheese just keeps getting better and better. I love the fresh goat, but it’s nice to have options. Delicious.

Then I stopped by the new Wine Geeks in Armonk. Derek and Carol Todd (Derek’s the former wine director at Blue HIll at Stone Barns) opened last week. I’ll give a full report later, but here’s a look at the outside. It’s in an old gas station, and they’ve done a wonderful job renovating.

On Saturday night I had some friends over to grill pork chops. We also served a salad (with lettuce and radishes from the garden, natch) and fingerling potatoes I picked up at the market in Pleasantville.

I brined the chops with sage and thyme, and tossed the fingerlings with lavender and thyme. The salad had a lovely pear vinaigrette. For dessert we tossed strawberries and peaches with warmed madelines and vanilla froyo.

Sunday night my mom cooked. She made a cedar planked salmon with herb Dijon vinagrette and served it with rice pilaf and Swiss chard from her garden:

For dessert, my husband made a fresh strawberry pie with berries from the garden — supplemented by some from the Piermont farmers market.

Lovely. And delicious.

And with that, here’s what people have been talking about this weekend. Not much, actually. Maybe they were too busy enjoying the great weather.

Oooh, thanks for the heads up- I didn’t realize the Piermont market had opened for the season yet. I can’t wait to visit this weekend!
