Food Finds in the Lower Hudson Valley

Harvest Market on the Sound Opens in Mamaroneck

June
24

I stopped by Harvest Market on the Sound in Mamaroneck the other day for some shopping and to pick up lunch. It’s a 5,000 square foot market with many of the brands you’ll find at Whole Foods and small gourmet markets. I entered from the door in the far right corner of this photo.

First thing you see along the wall is a bounty of produce:

Different apple and citrus:

In the other refrigerator case, herbs and lettuces:

In baskets, root vegetable and such:

The shelves hold nuts and grains:

I sometimes find it hard to find quinoa:

Tomato sauces, broths, jams, etc:

In the freezer case, duck fat and demi glace. Good!

Frozen organic chicken:

Local ice cream from Ronnybrook:

Continuing along the wall you come to dairy and fish:

There’s also a huge deli case on the other side of the store:

Fresh fish:

Steaks and sausages:

Prepared foods:

Olive bar:

And a kitchen in the back:

Fresh mozzarella:

Pizza and bread oven:

\

And prepared salads:

I ordered five sandwiches for my colleagues and me, and browsed the dessert counter:

It took a really long time to make the sandwiches…. at least 20 minutes. (I’m not the only one who had to wait… a report from a colleague said the same thing happened over the weekend.)

You check out along the window wall:

While I really liked the selection of groceries — especially the attention to hormone free and organic, as well as dietary concerns like gluten free and vegan — the sandwich and deli experience did leave something to be desired. First of all, the guy really couldn’t remember what I asked for on the sandwiches (he kept double checking). And I’m not one for a sandwich so big I can’t put my mouth around it, but this turkey and muenuster with lettuce and mayonseems a little skimpy for $6.75:

It’s all fluffy (not chewy) bread. Hardly any lettuce either. And he forgot the cheese on my friend’s cutlet:

One really super nice thing… They didn’t have a Reuben on the menu, but they offered to open the sauerkraut and warm the sandwich up for my friend:

So all in all — fabulous groceries. Deli — a little green. Eh, give ‘em time. I’m sure they’ll step it up. And I can’t wait to try the pizza and panini.
