Food Finds in the Lower Hudson Valley

Los Abuelos, a New Mexican Restaurant in Ossining

October
13

I got an email from a reader, who sent me a photo of the chorizo tacos at the restaurant:

none

Don’t they look delicious?

The reader, Katherine Curry, writes:

A lovely Mexican woman named Olga opened it up. She’s got two kids in the Ossining school system. The place is very small and not at all fancy inside.  So far I’ve tried the excellent guacamole, chicken tacos, chorizo tacos, and mushroom quesidillas.  She’s serving breakfast, lunch & dinner; I’ve only been for lunch.  Prices are a tiny bit steep ($10 for 3 soft tacos with rice & beans), I think, but I don’t care. No liquor license.
Here’s a picture of my chorizo tacos—notice the grilled green onions and grilled cactus pad on top?  Wow!  Hope you have the chance to check this place out sometime when you’re in our neck of the woods.

I’d give you an address if I could figure out what it is—it’s that kind of place.  Los Abuelos is on the east side of North Highland Avenue (aka Route 9), just across & slightly up from the Ossining Community Center.  The small white building is north of the intersection of 134/133 and Route 9.

I’ll be sure to get this in our restaurant listings and find the real address and phone for you all soon. Meantime, has anyone else been?

And I’ve since learned that Los Abuelos has a liquor license to serve wine and beer.

I’ve driven by this place a lot recently. It looks like someones house!

Los Abuelos is fantastic! A small restaurant that his clean and cozy—maybe 6 tables total. Parking is available without trouble. The food is incredible home cooking, the service is genuinely friendly, and the prices are reasonable. Loads of flavor here with some standards (carne asada, carnitas, etc.) as well as a few wonderful surprises (nopales, lengua, etc.) And their homemade pineapple water (agua de pina) is to die for… Enjoy!
